Tony takes the title Tony Stewart wasn''t able to get bonus points in the season finale, but his 50 bonus points in the first nine Chase races were enough to win the title as Greg Biffle beat Mark Martin by .017 of a second for Biffle''s series-best sixth win of the season. With his second consecutive Homestead win, Biffle was able to tie for second in the standings with Carl Edwards, breaking the tie with wins. Another Roush racer, Matt Kenseth, finished 3rd with Edwards coming home 4th. Photo Galleries... Stewart wins second title Truex wins back-to-back titles Also... McReynolds: Mears closes in on win Byrnes: Biffle battles for sixth win Stewart was tight all night, adjusting to prevent a repeat of his spin in Happy Hour on Friday night, but tight was all right as he cruised to a 15th-place finish after Jimmie Johnson crashed out early. Saturday''s Busch race winner, Ryan Newman, agreed to let pole-sitter Carl Edwards lead the first lap, and then Edwards let Newman take over the point. At lap 198, Jeff Gordon knocked into Newman''s left front fender, forcing the No. 12 car to come to pit road under a green flag to fix the left side of his car. Edwards took over the lead off of pit road on lap 45 after the third caution. Gordon caught him at lap 100. Twenty-seven laps later as Gordon got behind Jimmie Johnson, the No. 48 driver crashed, backing into the Turn 3 wall. The crash ended Johnson''s championship hopes. After the fifth restart, Johnson''s right rear tire had begun to get soft, and he slipped from 10th to 28th. Eventually the tire blew. Johnson''s Hendrick Motorsports teammate finished 9th, holding on to 11th place and the $1 million total prize and trip to New York that comes with it. Full story... The race ended under yellow as Kyle Petty wrecked on the backstretch, but Jarrett was leading Tony Stewart at the last scoring loop to snap Chevrolet''s 13-race winning streak at Talladega. And at 48 years, 10 months and 6 days of age, Jarrett became the fifth-oldest driver in NASCAR history to win a Cup race. As baseball settled its wild-card races this weekend, NASCAR''s Chase for the Nextel Cup wild card took out contender Mark Martin after 20 laps. Dale Earnhardt Inc. teammates Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Michael Waltrip were also knocked out of the race when Jimmie Johnson bumped 2nd-place Elliott Sadler in Turn 2, setting off an eight-car wreck. Chase Round 3: Talladega Race Trax | Results | Standings Chase for the championship page Riding with Junior: Talladega Analysis... McReynolds: Preventing the ''Big One'' Johnson got knocked out during the fourth caution when Ryan Newman bumped and spun out Casey Mears. Newman said Mears was already sideways when he got into the No. 41 car. The six-car wreck also damaged Chase drivers Greg Biffle and Rusty Wallace. Martin, who finished 41st, said, You can''t go against God''s will, and if it was God''s will, I''d have a championship by now. He said that only fans can change restrictor-plate racing because NASCAR and the drivers can''t do anything, according to him. Sadler said of Johnson''s bump, No sense of racing like that this early in the race. But Johnson said Earnhardt bumped the No. 48 car before he got into Sadler. Johnson was also blamed for moving up the track in the spring race at Talladega and starting a 25-car wreck. Johnson made five pit stops under the first caution to repair a right front fender problem. He fell back to 30th, and his Hendrick Motorsports teammates went back in the pack to try to help him draft back to the front. But a blown tire on the No. 48 car brought out the second caution and dropped him to 35th. Johnson''s day ended in 31st. Three different drivers led the first three laps with pole-sitter Sadler, Tony Stewart and Dale Jarrett running out front. On lap 5, Tony Stewart went below the yellow line on the backstretch and gave a position back to Jarrett as Sadler rocketed to the lead. While Rusty Wallace climbed from 41st to the top 20 by lap 8. Stewart traded the lead with Jamie McMurray around lap 50 as the No. 20 car sought clean air. He reported his engine was running at 260 degrees and not cooling down. His team took off tape during the third caution period as Brian Vickers, Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson taking two tires and gaining 13 positions lead the parade off of pit road. By the seventh caution, Stewart''s engine problems seemed to be behind him, and he led the most laps, clinching 10 bonus points. Dale Earnhardt Jr. took the lead, handing it over to Greg Biffle who came in a lap later. As Earnhardt slowed to come to pit road, Stewart got into the No. 8 car, causing damage to his left front. Stewart made his way back to the front, taking the lead from Newman with eight laps to go, but Newman slid into the lead on the next-to-last lap to take the first race in the Chase for the Nextel Cup. Scott Riggs got loose, knocking Busch into the wall on lap 3. An angry Busch took his message directly to Riggs'' crew chief Rodney Childers. The No. 97 crew is frantically trying to bolt on a front end, using their first mulligan in the first race. Last year, it was race seven before Busch lost an engine and finished 42nd, his only Chase finish outside the top 10 on his way to winning the title. After 45 minutes off the track, Busch got back on the speedway at lap 69 66 laps down. He''s making the most of his one chance to meet NASCAR''s minimum speed of a 32.77-second lap, moving from 43rd to 35th by lap 264 which gives him 24 points more than he would have had if he finished last. He''s 142 points behind Stewart. Meanwhile in the Chase for 11th, Elliott Sadler has dropped from the top 10 to a lap-down in 29th after sliding into Rusty Wallace, turning sideways and getting knocked back straight by Dale Earnhardt Jr. Stewart hopes to complete the third consecutive New Hampshire season sweep, following in the tire tracks of Johnson and Busch. The latter won the first race in the Chase last year on his way to the title. Minutes later, Gordon utters an expletive on live television. Tony Stewart nearly drivers over the helmet, running right behind Waltrip in 7th.
